Blagaj Day Tour
Snapshot of Blagaj day tour
As we make our way south of Mostar, enjoy the views as we take you through the picturesque Old Tsar vineyards and magnificent valleys full of fruit trees. These vineyards date back to the Austro-Hungarian times when the winemakers from around here produced the highest quality sought after vino for the royals and nobility in far away Vienna. The landscape will most definitely remind you of the picturesque and romantic Italian Tuscany, with a Herzegovinian understatement. As we make our way further, we arrive at our main destination point, the small town of Blagaj. The town Blagaj was once the capital of the ancient region of Hum, which is now the territory of Herzegovina.
Upon arrival we make our way to the beautiful ancient ruins of Stjepan-Grad, the old walls of the fortress sitting high above Blagaj, first constructed by Illyrian tribes many centuries ago. It was then strengthened and fortified by the Romans, followed by the brave and defiant King of Bosnia, and finally expanded by the Ottomans.
We reach the fortress via a winding 30 degree incline ‘goat-path’ which takes about an hour easy walking from the base of Blagaj. Along the way you will see wild pomegranate trees and endemic herb shrubs that will leave you with an unforgettable experience of the senses. As we enter the fortresses high walls, you will be left speechless as you witness the panoramic beauty of the entire region beneath, covering both rivers Buna and Bunica and the entire valey of Mostar.
Our next destination is the Dervish house in Blagaj. Blagaj hosts the finest example of an underground karst river, Buna. It flows out of an awe inspiring 200m hanging cliff wall and single-handedly creates the magnificent Buna River. Unsurprisingly, the Ottoman sultan was so impressed with the natural beauty, he ordered that a tekija-Dervish House, be built right next to it. This 16th century house/monastery was purpose built for the Dervishes and still remains one of the most mystical places in all of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
This is not the end of your adventures today! After a short drive in our comfortable vehicle, we enter an untouched nature reserve that is home to a hidden beauty, the spring of the river Bunica. This is our well kept secret, so you are unlikely to see any tourists here, we will have a short break and for those wanting a refreshing dip during the summer time, an opportunity for a short swim is available. These waters are rich in iodine, the water is crystal clear and a superb blue-green colour. Please note however, as the temperature of the water is quite low, guidance and caution prior to entering are the rules for this adventure.
