Before the war the area was teaming with wildlife and throughout history hunting lodges were built here for famous kings and rulers of this beautiful country. It used to be full of mouflon, chamois, bears and wolves. Unfortunately, the war destroyed much of wildlife. It is no longer a hunting zone and these animals are few and far between.

The first part of the trail passes by the canyon of the river Diva Grabovica through a forest of white and black hornbeam where you can meet different species of birds, butterflies and reptiles. After that, we enter a steeper part of the trail where beech and pine is the predominant tree. Beautiful forest spring water can be found in several places during the ascent, it is crystal clear and ice cold, perfect refreshment during hot summer days. We’ll hike 2.5 hours before reaching our destination, a mountain hut “Zlijeb” at 1092 m above sea level and a spectacular viewpoint overlooking the largest rock face on the Balkan Peninsula at over 1,000 meters – Veliki Kuk.

For those who find this activity not enough, the hike can be extended to the “Tise” mountain hut at 1380 m above sea level, which is approximately 1.5 hours of additional walking. There, another viewpoint awaits you with a fabulous view of the high cliffs of the Cvrsnica mountain massif.

Also, and this especially applies to the summer season, on the way back to Mostar we have a nice opportunity to refresh ourselves and swim in the pleasant and healing waters of the mountain river Drezanka. At that place, right on the river bank, there is a family-run restaurant where you can try many local specialties, including river trout roasted on charcoal.
